Child custody and child support are civil substantive law, though other laws also apply.
Uniform laws are model laws passed individually by each state. Two important uniform laws are the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction Ace, which addresses interstate custody disputes, and the Uniform Interstate Family Support Act, which addresses interstate support problems.
Case law is a written opinion from a higher review court, such as an appellate court, that clarifies federal and state laws.
Court rules are made by state or local judges, and address common procedural issues such as time limits, etc.
Policies are informal preferences of an individual judge. In child custody, the particular bias of a particular judge is very important.
